Traditional security tools were built for structured inputs and fixed APIs. They typically cannot:

In real environments, sensitive data tends to move along four AI-specific paths:

1. Prompts and instructions – Employees paste customer records, source code, or internal plans directly into AI tools. Even with legitimate intent, this becomes a new data transfer channel.

These flows are hard to govern because they are:

• Unstructured – Data is embedded in natural language, not in fixed fields.
• Dynamic – Context is assembled at runtime and can change per interaction.
• Ambiguous – Intent has to be inferred, not declared in a schema.

Attackers are already exploiting this. For example, 60% of observed attack traffic targets system prompts to leak internal instructions and IP, and indirect prompt injection via files or websites succeeds with significantly fewer attempts than direct attacks.

In practice, this model has helped organizations like Dropbox and Nubank move from experimentation to production-scale AI.
